Elementary Academic Information

Homework

Homework is a part of academic emphasis. It should always be done neatly, accurately and on time. Homework should never be considered as "busy work". It will be given by classroom teachers for specific purposes. Each student will be expected to complete the assigned homework. Students will be encouraged to use assignment books to carefully take down each night's work.

Make-Up Work

It is the student's responsibility to obtain all make-up work from his teachers immediately upon his return to school. Failure to obtain make-up work is not an excuse for not doing work missed. In cases when absences are known beforehand, such as class trips, individual or family trips, etc., the student should make up the work BEFORE the absence occurs.

Students who are absent for any reason will be required to make up work missed in each class. The student has as many days to make up his work as he has missed (not applicable to assignments given in advance). Only in extreme cases of prolonged absence will more than one week be allowed for work to be made up. This permission will be granted by the administration. A day's absence does not excuse a student from responsibilities for all assignments on the day of his return.

Grades will be withheld if make-up work is not turned in; it is possible for a student to fail a course if he does not turn in all incomplete's.

Progress Reports

Student progress reports are issued four times a year at the middle of each marking period. Progress reports must be signed by the parents and returned to the homeroom teacher or office within three days.

Report Cards

The purpose of our reporting system is to give parents and students an accurate indication of the progress or lack of progress being made. Each students is evaluated in two areas; academic and citizenship. The academic grade is based upon the actual work done on homework, quizzes and exams.

Academic grading is on a scale of 100%

A+ 99-100   C+ 77-79
A 94-98   C 73-76
A- 90-93   C- 70-72
B+ 87-89   D+ 67-69
B 83-86   D 63-66
B- 80-82   D- 60-62

Report cards are issued every nine weeks. If the student does not bring a card home or if the reports is lacking some grades, please contact the school office immediately. Parents should report a lost report card to the office. A duplicate will be sent home for signing. Students should not write on their report cards.

Citizenship

The citizenship grade is a number (1-5) used to reflect attitude, effort, participation and conduct in each subject. It is based on character qualities such as; self-control, obedience, attentiveness, truthfulness, thoroughness, dependability, responsibility, punctuality, etc.

Citizenship Grades:
5-Excellence in character qualities
4-Above average character qualities
3-Average character qualities
2-Below average character qualities
1-Failure in many qualities

Any student receiving a (1) in any course will be ineligible for sports and cannot hold any class office for the next nine weeks.

Testing Program

Faith Baptist Schools has a detailed program of testing designed to measure the student's abilities and progress. The results of the testing are used to aid the teachers and administrators in improving the curriculum. Each year the following tests are administered:
Otis-Lennon School Ability Test - Grades 4,7,10
Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) - Grades 1 - 9

Juniors are required to take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test). Sophomores are required to take the PLAN test. Both tests are offered during the fall semester at Faith Baptist Schools and may require a small fee. These tests will show areas of academic weakness before the student's senior year as well as prepare the student for the SAT and the ACT.

Seniors are recommended to register for the ACT (American College Test) since most colleges prefer this test information. Of course, students must pay the standard fee which is charged nationwide for the ACT. All forms necessary for the registration of these tests are available through the school office.
